“Pay No Attention to What’s Behind the Curtain!?”

Remember that part of The Wizard of Oz? You know it’s when they meet the ‘wizard’ and Toto starts messing around with the big curtain to reveal a meek little man using a lot of smoke and mirrors to make himself seem bigger than life. The problem with the logic is that it works for some time until people start poking around deeper and deeper into you church, school, business, organization, etc. It simply isn’t enough to look good on the outside…people will eventually see right through it.

It reminds me of a recent trip my wife and I took to a popular mexican grill. (here’s a hint, they have burritos as big as babies and name entree’s after 80’s movies and sitcom characters). It was a wonderful meal. The steak Quesadilla was kicking, the cheese dip hot, and the coke was not flat. I said to Rebekah, um this is the best ____’s I have had in a long time! Before we left I went to the bathroom….um, I assume they weren’t expecting me. Let the pictures explain….

Hopefully these pictures aren’t too small to see all the grossness I found in there.  It didn’t get this way in a couple of hours.  Some of that ‘nasty ‘ was dried and caked on.  It was like layers of grime were built up on the sink…it was just a ‘hot, hot mess’.  So no matter how good the food was, this will make me think long and hard before I ever go back.  It just simply isn’t enough to look good,  the inside has to match the outside to effectively reach customers, students, employees, etc.  And especially churches, Are you simply ok with looking good on Sunday Morning’s or are you operating out of an overflow of what God is doing week in and week out in your staff, members, attenders, and organizational structure.  The truth is if you aren’t….your ‘curtain call’ may be right around the corner.

Why is everyone trying to be a ‘Troy’

Is it just me or does our society seem to be going up the well in “Troy’s Bucket” by the…well…bucketloads? Wasn’t there a time when we were much cooler by being a Goonie? (Goonies – classic 80’s movie, and the movie in which I am deriving this post) There was a time in our music, fashion, and entertainment praised individuality….now everyone in High School dresses the same, all the music on the radio is homogeneous, and lets don’t even start with movie /moviestars

But don’t worry, there are some goonies still out there. Here are a couple to check out.

Movies – Pan’s Labyrinth (masterpiece by Guillermo Del Toro’ -warning: spainish w/ English subtitles)

Be Kind Rewind

Music – The Ponys/Turn The Lights Out

Phil Colins/Face Value (a blast from the past, just listen, I’m sure it will bring a smile to your face)

As Tall As Lions/As Tall As Lions

So put on your slick shoes and grab your inhaler, do a quick truffle shuffle, and go look for One Eye’d Willie! Celebrate what makes you different!

redbox

ever heard of it.  neither had I until moving.  It is a joint venture of Coinstar and McDonalds.  Located only in McDonald’s restaurants, are ‘redbox’s’.  Each automated ATM like unit holds up to 500 copies of new and classic release DVD’s for rent. $1, yes that’s right 1$.  Pick your movie, swipe your card, get your movie, awesome!

Hi from Lonesome town.

My baby’s gone. She left last Saturday morning for TN.  I am staying behind until Thanksgiving to pack up and finish up some loose ends around the ‘Dubbya’.  I had the cable/internet disconnected yesterday….and let me tell ya, it’s real quiet at night…really quiet.  I am trying to stay busy by playing guitar, packing, and hanging w/ friends…but I am not a fan of sleeping by myself anymore.  It’s time to get back to work, maybe I can scrounge up some ‘rabbit ears’ for the tv and watch some ‘House’ tonight.

This is a quote I am quoting that was quoted by another blog

Thanks for quoting this Joe. I’m not sure who Chris Elrod is but he makes me laugh!

God’s Word doesn’t need our “dog and pony show” to be relevant today. We should just feel blessed that He still uses jackasses to talk…

the waiting game…

My new Mac isn’t scheduled to ship for another week…Apple worsened my situation by sending me this just yesterday.

They could have waited to send everyhting at once, but no…they had to go and rub it in!

amp update

too good to be true.  So I got my new amp for a killer deal, however I had a couple of tubes blow this week.  they were pretty worn.  I am getting Fender to send me some new ones since they are covered under warranty.  Until then I need a new pair and have it biased by Sunday morning….help please!  I am having no luck finding anyone who can bias amps in Wilmington, what is it with this town!?

empty tank?

So I saw this bumper sticker the other day.  It said, ‘This car runs on prayer power!”  Sweet!  How do I convert my gas tank to this?  Down w/ Bio-Diesel, and gas is killin’ me!

Quote of the Day (einstein)

Everything that is really great and inspiring is created by the individual who can labor in freedom.

” “

I’ve been all about qoutes lately.  I heard another good one tonight.

In Life,  follow your dreams, and look out for your friends.  If not you will have no one to help you get there, and no one to celebrate with when you do.

ears can breathe

today is a sad day for most and a happy day for some.  I have been trying to grow rock-star hair since January.  And I did, however; I had no idea how hot all that hair would be in 90 degree weather, until this week.  and so…it is done.  there is kind of a ‘sad hope’ going on within me now.  at least my ears can breathe.

(yes, that’s grey hair in the pic)

situational perspective

here’s a helpful qoute when you are dealing with a problem. (I heard this on TV last night)
when you are on the titanic, you load the lifeboats..you don’t stop and yell at the iceberg!

back to the future

GREAT SCOTT!  every once in a while you come across a diamond in the rough.  Well…I have found it.  here is a clip from the 1986 dove awards featuring smitty (michael w.) and some then relatively unknown talent.  the guy with the pink guitar and girl hat is Chris Rodriguez, you can catch him rip it up with Keith Urban today.  also back in the back, on the other guitar, is Dann Huff….seriously DANN HUFF.  He’s only behind 75% of every song you hear on country radio, including some peep you may have heard of like Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood.  So enjoy this trip back, to the early days of today’s hits……

why does bottled water cost so much?

…well, I may have part of the answer.  A no name science guy on the internet recently did an observation on the process of making and distributing Fiji bottled water.  If you are like me, its hard to believe that we pay so much for something that is technically….FREE.

anyway, he found that one bottle  takes twenty-six times as much water to make than you drink.  also some randomness about fossil fuels, I won’t go there.

it’s obvious….Houston, we have a problem.
